March 2020 Designer Picks

Did you know that March 8th is International Women's Day? Did you know that March is Women's History Month? We did!

As many of you know, Schoener was started by our very own Linda Schoener over forty years ago. To celebrate this wonderful month and in honor of our esteemed founder, our designers chose items designed by women or from a woman owned/started company.

GORDON PEDESTAL DESK by Theodore Alexander

This stylish desk, designed by Alexa Hampton for Theodore Alexander, is a modern take on a traditional French pedestal desk. The subtle curved kneehole opeing and legs contrast perfectly with the right angles of the pedestal top, making it a beautiful blend of masculine and feminine lines. Both ends offer slide out leather blotters for added functionality and style.

LINDA SCHOENER, Principal Designer

In 1998, Alexa Hampton took her position as owner and president of her father's iconic firm, Mark Hampton, where, the firm states, she "advanced its legacy of elegant, practical, classically based interiors for modern living." She is regularly named to Architectural Digest's AD100 and House Beautiful's Top Designed list, but it is her design principles that make her a favorite at Schoener.

"While many say that form and function are separate entities, in my mind, they are fundamentally linked. Purpose is the cornerstone of ultimate luxury. I endeavor to design products that are both beautiful and useful."

- Alexa Hampton

Hampton continues her dedication to the design industry through numerous articles, essays, and books; her designed collection of furniture, lighting, fabrics, carpet, and hardware; and by assisting the designers of the future through her position on the board of trustees for the New York School of Interior Design and The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art.

GLORY DUVET SET by Ann Gish

The perfect bed looks incomplete without the perfect bedding. This duvet set, designed by the team at Ann Gish, is the definition of modern elegance and is sure to be the perfect touch to any contemporary bedroom. The 100% cotton sateen depicts a modern floral pattern in silver metallic thread, for just a touch of shimmer.

BRENT LITTLEFIELD, Interior Designer

After working as an interior designer, a television and radio producer, and a chef, Ann Gish began Ann Gish, Inc. in 1991. Creating pieces that was nothing but luxury to the senses, Ann Gish offered her work to the finest stores, designers, and hotels, with many of her products being featured in celebrity homes and in many films, television shows, and on Broadway. Her products are known for their elegant designs, exquisite detailing, and wonderful texture. Even the sound the fabric makes as it is moved or touched is thought of during the design process of these amazing pieces.

Unfortunately, in August of 2019, Ann Gish lost her battle with lung cancer. Her work continues through that of her daughter, Jane Gish, who assumed position of CEO at Ann Gish, Inc.

NIZWA CABINET by E.J. Victor

We love when a simple form is anything but simple, and this beautiful cabinet, designed by Bethan Gray, is just that. What looks like a simple box, three-door cabinet on a stretcher base, is actually a showpiece of master craftsmanship. Intricately hand-laid veneer and brass inlays create a beautiful petal-like design on each door, mimicking the rounded castellations of the Nizwa Fort in Oman and adding interest to the simple lines of this cabinet.

DANA PAYNE, Interior Designer

Bethan Gray established Bethan Gray Design in 2008 to create luxurious, handcrafted collections inspired by her travels to India, Asia, the Middle East, Northern Africa, and South America. Spending the decade developing meaningful relationships with master craftspeople, Gray is able to create pieces that blend contemporary design and technology with traditional crafting. She prides herself in building these relationships on mutual trust and respect that help to achieve the ambitions of all parties; working within equal partnerships; and giving endangered skills a spotlight in commercial markets.

Bethan Gray Design is based in London, where Gray herself nurtures, encourages, and mentors female designers. She recently launced a Prize for Women in Craft with Cardiff Metropolitan University, where she is an honorary fellow.

ANCHOR LOUNGE CHAIR by Baker Furniture

When we are told a piece is designed by Barbara Barry, we know to expect sophisticated lines and comfort. This stunning lounge chair is no exception. The delicate non-right angles create an unassuming silhouette that is sure to feel right at home in any space. The fixed seat cushion allows for deep lounging, while a perfectly sized lumbar pillow offers any additional support one might need while relaxing.

ROBYN BRIDGMAN, Interior Designer

Barbara Barry is well renowned as a talented designer with the ability to blend classic sophistication with comfort and livability. Since establishing her Los Angeles design firm in 1985, she has created an extensive portfolio that includes both elegant, timeless interiors and refined home collections that include furniture, lighting, textiles, crystal, plumbing, and tile.

As an active plein-air painter, Barry is used to transforming nature's subtle colors and forms into graceful forms.

"I believe timelessness comes from simplicity."

- Barbara Barry
